Mid-Cape Immigrant Rights Coalition Update June

This was the text of a recent newsletter and we believe it is important thus are adding to this page

This text will also be added to our Imigrant info page.

In collaboration with the Cape Cod Coalition for Safe Communities and the Falmouth Immigrant Rights Coalition, the Mid-Cape Immigrant Rights Coalition (MCIRC) is actively involved in supporting and advocating for our immigrant communities in the Mid-Cape area (and parts of the Lower Cape). If you would like to be an active member of this Coalition or simply be on their email list, please contact Susan Gregory-Davis: susangregorydavis@gmail.com, Leadership Team member.

Currently, MCIRC is working on two very important initiatives:

1) Setting up a database of volunteers for our Mutual Aid Network to support immigrant individuals and families impacted by ICE activity. We are partnering with LatinX in Action (Hyannis), the Brazilian Resource Center (S. Yarmouth), and local immigrant faith communities (in process) to match community needs and resources. If you are interested in being part of this support network (for example-providing transportation to grocery stores, work, appointments, etc.; accompanying families to detention facilities; delivering grocery orders to homes; offering childcare during ESL classes; providing other essential support services, etc.), please scan the QR code below to complete our survey of interests and skills. Submitting a response does not represent any obligation, and your contact information will ONLY be used for the purpose of organizing this Mutual Aid Network. There is a place for everyone to volunteer! Thank you for your interest!

2) Outreach to the business community focusing on “know your rights” (especially Fourth Amendment Rights) and assisting businesses with developing protocols for how to respond to an ICE encounter at their workplace. In partnership with other groups on the Cape and Islands, we are hoping to build a Cape-wide Fourth Amendment (4A) business community and website based on the work of the Martha’s Vineyard 4A Project.  If you are interested in working with MCIRC on this initiative, please contact Jan Darcy jandarcy@live.com, MCIRC Steering Committee member

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The ILRC’s red cards give examples of how people can exercise these rights. However, they do not provide individualized legal advice. Community members are encouraged to check in with a trusted legal service provider for questions about their situation.
