We Join National Indivisible Calling for Minority Leader Schumer to Step Down

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, March 15, 2025 (PDF copy here )

Cape Cod Women for Change and MidCape Indivisible join other Indivisible organizations across the region, the Commonwealth, and the country to call on Senator Chuck Schumer to step aside as Minority Leader and insist our Senators, Warren and Markey call for a meeting to make this happen.

Cape Cod, MA – Minority Leader Schumer, as chair of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate, broke with the vast majority of his caucus to allow a GOP funding bill to advance, without any restrictions on the ongoing efforts from Donald Trump and Elon Musk to dismantle the federal government. Cape Cod Women for Change and MidCape Indivisible issued the following statement:

“Under Senator Chuck Schumer’s Leadership, Senate Democrats just surrendered a rare moment of leverage to rein in the chaos and harm of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Congressional Republicans. By voting to advance the GOP government funding bill, rather than demanding anything in return, Schumer handed more power to the extremists destroying the government. This was not just a strategic mistake – it was a demonstration that Schumer is not prepared to lead the Democratic opposition to fascism and protect our democracy. We thank him for his years of service and call on him to step aside as minority leader.

We asked our Senators to vote against the CR in what we thought was a majority of Democratics. Both Senators Markey and Warren voted against the CR, but Schumer failed us all in the end by voting in favor of the closure and allowing this horrific spending bill to pass. By giving in, he abdicated Congress’s leverage against Trump and Musk.

We are asking our Senators, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey to call for a Democratic Caucus meeting to change leadership in the Senate. We are grateful for Senator Schumer’s years of service, but as we face the dismantling of our government, we need new leadership who will stand up and fight against Trump and Musk. These are critical times that demand strong leadership.

We will continue to lead protests and calls for action to fight the Coup Creep. We will not give in to the Trump-Musk Oligarchy. We need leaders in Washington who will fight the fight with every tool in their toolbox.

We do not come to this decision lightly – for the country, or for our democracy. But the stakes are too high, and we need leaders who are willing to fight as hard as we are. Schumer should step aside as Minority Leader so another Democrat who’s willing to lead the opposition can step up to take his place.”
