Take action! Tell your MoC to support the COVID relief we need

As of now, Congress is still negotiating a COVID relief package. They will probably come to a compromise this weekend. That means we still have time to contact our MoC to give our input to our elected officials.

Let’s be clear from the start, the Democratic led US House passed the Heroes Act last MAY. That cost of that package was in the trillions of dollars and included $600 a week for unemployment, relief for student loans, help with mortgage and rent, help for hospitals and aid to cities and towns all suffering now with increased costs and decreased revenues.

The house passed the bill our country, our states, cities, counties, cities, towns and PEOPLE needed SEVEN MONTHS AGO.

The Heroes Act has since been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk, while he has the senate simply confirming federal judges and taking their vacations, ignoring the suffering of this country.  People are dying in record numbers, a 9/11 every day! If we had the kind of relief the Heroes act offered, we could “stay at home” long enough to get control of this virus.

Now they are further negotiating a bill in the billions, nowhere near the trillions needed to fund the Heroes Act, because suddenly the GOP is worried about the national debt- that ballooned with their tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations.

It boggles the mind that people don’t understand this and continue to elect McConnell and his minions – allowing those who represent a minority to control the majority.

As of this email, the current negotiated relief bill will include only $300 extra per week for individuals on unemployment and no stimulus checks. Here in MA, as in many states, some barely get 60% of a paycheck on unemployment, and unemployment plus $300 won’t pay the bills as a paycheck would. So people continue to go to work out of necessity and risk catching/spreading the virus.

Additionally, our states, local governments and hospitals need relief, including money to get vaccinations to all of us.

Relief Can’t Wait: Demand Congress Pass a COVID Relief Bill

(Use this as a template for your message)
We have to wait until January 20th for Joe Biden to be inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States, but COVID relief can’t wait that long. Nearly every state in the country is experiencing sustained increases in COVID-19 cases, and thousands of lives are lost each week. 12 million unemployed workers will lose their benefits on December 26th – the day after Christmas – and a total of 16 million will lose benefits by the end of the year. More than 1 in 4 adults with children are behind on rent, and the federal moratorium on evictions is set to expire on December 31st. The situation is dire and Congress must act without delay.

Fortunately, we know what a meaningful COVID relief bill would look like. It would provide money to state and local governments to ensure they can properly run school districts, testing sites, and other public services through the winter. It would extend the programs set to expire – like unemployment insurance and paid leave – that support folks who have lost their jobs or are facing challenges affording rent, utilities, or feeding and caring for their families. It would put money in people’s pockets. And it would include necessary public health measures like expanded testing and tracing capacity, workplace safety measures, and free and equitable distribution of vaccines and treatments.

Meaningful relief does not include Mitch McConnell’s giveaways to big corporations, especially immunity for corporations that knowingly violate public health guidelines and expose their employees to the virus. Fortunately, Democrats have so far treated this as a poison pill, and it needs to stay that way. Make no mistake, McConnell would prefer to fill a relief bill with goodies for his mega donors and corporate allies, and we can’t allow that to happen.

The virus is surging while aid is expiring for millions of people, and Congress needs to pass relief as soon as possible.

That’s why we need you to call your Senators and Representatives to demand they pass a COVID relief bill before the end of the year session without McConnell’s poison pill provisions. We need to get the pandemic under control and support people being impacted by the economic crisis. The pandemic isn’t waiting, and neither should Congress.

Relief can’t wait! Use your voice.
