Call to Action: Support Senate Democrats effort to filibuster Jeff Sessions’ confirmation!

Once again, we need to support Senate Democrats who are taking part in a late-night, if not all-night, attempt at a filibuster to prevent a confirmation of one of the remaining Trump cabinet posts. The vote on this confirmation is scheduled for Wednesday evening (2/8/2017.) We MUST join a nationwide calling effort; call, call, call, until you get through! You can also call after hours, some voicemail accounts do fill, but keep trying. Calls count. Records are kept about calls, for and against an issue. If you can’t get through, call Republicans on the list below (same list that was used for DeVos as these are the GOP senators most vulnerable right now.)
It may seem like a fruitless effort, but the votes are close. Even more important though we must put GOP senators on notice, especially those up for reelection. By calling them we are letting them know we are watching. We also increase our power to oppose any policy changes, like the most recent ban on Muslim’s coming to this country. These calls matter. Let’s add our voices to those who are speaking for us now on the senate floor.
Tuesday evening Senator Elizabeth Warren was pushed off the senate floor for reading Coretta Scott King’s letter, from the congressional record, in her speech against Sessions. Take a minute to read that letter here or read a copy at the bottom of this post.
Sessions has voted against key initiatives that protect women, like the violence against women act, and is known to be a pro-life senator.
His past is full of accusations of racism, and there is serious concerns that he will support Trump’s attempt at a ban on Muslims:
The Southern Poverty Law Center went so far as to call him the “champion of anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant extremists.” Last week, six people, including NAACP President Cornell Brooks, were arrested during a sit-in protest in Sessions’ Mobile, Alabama office. And in an extraordinary move last week, more than 1,200 faculty members, from 176 law schools in 49 states, signed a letter opposing Sessions’ candidacy for attorney general. They expressed concerns about his stance on mass incarceration, climate change, women, the LGBTQ community, immigration and civil rights.
Tonight and tomorrow, until tomorrow evening, we need to call senators who may not be our representatives. Why? Several GOP senators have been identified as possible flips on the DeVos vote. These senators are vulnerable in upcoming re-elections, have received pressure from their home constituencies.
Again, if you can’t get through to their Washington office phone, call another one of their offices, and again, you can call off-hours and leave a message.
This is a contact list for ALL of the senators, and the list below is important; focus on the senators who are up for re-election in 2018.
