Update Friday evening. The house voted to approve the bill as described below – along party lines (we need to change those lines in 2018!) Even though MA is represented by Democrats, be sure to contact your own Congressman/woman and Senator. But as we move forward we will identify members of the committees that are making policy, considering action and recommendations and give you contact information. In the end, like the Thursday 1am Senate vote, and Friday House vote, each policy change will end up as a vote of the whole body.

Increasing pressure on republicans by people in their own districts is starting to have an impact as they consider their next elections. In additions to actions you can take listed below this message comes via another group from Elizabeth Warren’s office:

Senator Elizabeth Warren’s staff member said that what would help the most would be to call the five Republican senators who have broken away from the GOP to demand a slow down of the ACA repeal. Tell them how much you appreciate their efforts to stop the train wreck and share your story.
They are:
Senator Bob Corker – (202) 224-3344
Senator Lisa Murkowski – (202) 224-6665
Senator Rob Portman – (202) 224-3353
Senator Susan Collins – (202) 224-2523
Senator Bill Cassidy – (202) 224-5824

If you tweet or use Facebook, this is a list of both house and senate members with accounts so that you can make contact via social media: http://triagecancer.org/congressional-twitter-handles/

While you were sleeping, Friday at 1 a.m., the  Senate voted along party lines 51 – 48, then Friday afternoon the Republican House successfully used their majority to confirm the GOP plans to:
1. End coverage for preexisting conditions, veterans benefits, and aid to rural hospitals.
2. Remove discrimination protection for women in healthcare.
3. Against the provision allowing children to remain on their parent’s insurance till the age of 26.
4. Cut off funding for the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
5. Against ACA contraceptive coverage and maternity care provision.
6. To direct committees to send budget legislation to defund and repeal the Affordable Care Act. (ACA aka Obamacare)
7. No more requirement for private insurance to accept people with preexisting conditions and they can now reinstate lifetime caps for coverage once again.

pro_obamacare_protestEven though these GOP Senators and Representatives have promised they will repeal and replace the ACA, they have nothing to replace it. If they do come up with a plan, it’s clear the list above won’t be on it. They have taken further actions to completely repeal the ACA in coming sessions via budget and rules changes.

ACT NOW! Use the information below to make contacts and tell the GOP Congress to stop gutting the ACA; stop any action that cuts our healthcare!

Use this link to contact your own Congressman/woman (Representative to the House) Find Your Representative If you use a contact form and have a personal story to tell about what the ACA has meant or you – add it but keep it short- 200 words is good, more than 400 is too much. Give them a reason to fight for you.

Then call or fax Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s: Phone:(202) 225-3031  Fax:(202) 225-3393. Speaker Ryan’s survey line is still open but we don’t know if he still uses it, if you have a minute add it to your to-do list. Call (202) 225-0600….Press 2 to weigh in on the issue. You’ll hear a recording about the bill to repeal it, then Press 1 to support continuing the Affordable Healthcare Act. It takes less than 2 minutes!

If you use twitter work up a tweet storm to the entire House Republican Caucus here: @HouseGOP and Paul Ryan: @speakerRyan here’s an example:

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY HEALTHCARE #ACA In 2018 millions of people will remember what you are doing NOW! @HouseGOP @SpeakerRyan #saveACA

Contact your senator too, as the process has only just begun: https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/  If you have that story, use the email form to share the same story you shared with your Congressman/woman.

And contact Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: Phone: (202) 224-2541
FAx: (202) 224-2499

For Twitter users contact the Senate Republican Caucus: @SenateGOP and Mitch McConnell: @SenateMajLdr

There is something so personal about this. This is our health. This is our access to care. This is our children’s health, our parents health. For women this is peace of mind, contraception, screenings that were once cost-prohibitive. For parents this is your child’s health. For senior citizens this is that fear that your care will exceed the lifetime cap.

This should make you angry. Use that anger and call fax and tell everyone you know to do the same!

Studies show the majority of people, even Republicans, don’t want this to happen. (some studies even show that a substantial percentage of those who say they want Congress to repeal Obamacare say they like the ACA. Right. Same thing.)  They have nothing in place to replace it. Trump has plans of his own, but the Senate and House make the laws that control this.

Then after the inauguration and the March on Washington (and many cities around the country) we must begin a storm of objections directed at Trump.
